When one side of a label prints darker than the other, increasing overall darkness is a poor first experiment. It changes the already-dark side while leaving the cause of the imbalance unresolved. Compare the image across the web, inspect the contact path, and establish whether the gradient follows the printer or the label material.
A gradient, a line, or a repeating patch
Print a representative test containing the same text and small filled features near the left, center, and right of the usable area. Keep all features within the supported print width and on the label, not exposed liner. Include the production barcode at its normal position.
Mark feed direction and printer-side orientation. Distinguish a smooth side-to-side gradient from a narrow missing line, a diagonal ribbon fold, or a patch that repeats down the label. Those patterns should not be grouped into one “uneven density” complaint.
Retain consecutive labels. A single sample cannot show whether the web drifts, the defect changes after a stop, or a repeating mark is associated with a rotating component. Record the pattern without assigning the component until a controlled check supports the inference.
Eliminate loading and contamination first
Stop safely, let the printhead cool, and verify that it closes correctly. Check label guides, ribbon seating, and the prescribed roll alignment. Look for debris or adhesive on accessible contact surfaces, then use the model's approved cleaning procedure.
Inspect the platen for visible damage and material buildup. Do not use a blade to restore a groove or attempt to compensate for a damaged roller by applying more head pressure. Record the condition for maintenance review.
Repeat the original test at unchanged settings after reloading or cleaning. This retains a useful cause-and-effect comparison and may prevent an unnecessary alignment adjustment.
Pressure balance depends on the construction
SATO describes head balance as pressure distribution between the printhead and platen. Its CL4NX Plus/CL6NX Plus guidance relates pressure to media thickness, including the liner, and balance to media width. It also links imbalance with unequal print darkness and media travel. That makes total construction thickness relevant. Two labels with the same face material can have different liners or coatings. A change in roll width can also make an old pressure arrangement unsuitable. Record these differences before deciding the ribbon formulation has changed.
Adjust only the controls described for the installed printer. On the ZT510, Zebra calls for appropriate toggle positioning before pressure adjustment and recommends the lowest pressure that produces the desired print quality. Zebra ZT510 pressure procedure
Do not copy dial numbers or toggle locations from a neighboring printer with different media. Photograph or record the baseline, make a controlled adjustment within the manual, and assess tracking as well as darkness. If alignment or mounting is suspect, use qualified service support.
Does the weak side follow the stock?
Use an approved control roll of the same construction and dimensions. Keep the job, ribbon, speed, and darkness unchanged. If the gradient disappears, retain unprinted stock from the suspect roll and investigate its surface or construction with the converter.
Where the process safely permits it, compare samples from different approved rolls or lanes. Do not flip adhesive labels over, reverse an unsupported winding, or move stock outside the printer's prescribed tracking position merely to create an experiment.
Pay particular attention to preprint and varnish boundaries. If density changes precisely where the surface changes, include those locations in the sample sent to the label supplier. A material drawing is more informative than a generic description such as “gloss white.”
The weakest required print position matters
Check the barcode and smallest required text at their actual production positions. A good image at the center does not establish acceptability at an edge where variable data may appear on another format.
Confirm the corrected setup after a normal roll change and during a representative run. Save the material references, pressure positions, print settings, and retained sample together. If unevenness returns repeatedly, the trend should trigger a maintenance or material investigation rather than a new undocumented darkness increase on every shift.
